Raz Segal

Raz Segal is an Israeli American historian and Associate Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies, and Endowed Professor in the Study of Modern Genocide, at Stockton University in New Jersey. He holds a Ph.D. in history from Clark University and has written extensively on the Holocaust in Carpathian Ruthenia and Hungary. Segal, who is Jewish and a dual U.S.-Israel citizen, has spoken publicly about his family’s Holocaust history and his scholarly focus on mass violence and genocide. Since October 2023, Segal has become a prominent public critic of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, describing Israel’s blockade and assault as a “textbook case of genocide” and a “retaliatory genocidal assault,” and joining hundreds of scholars in warning of possible genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. His interventions, including in Jewish Currents, Democracy Now!, and NJ Spotlight News, have connected current events to the Nakba and broader patterns of Israeli state violence, and have figured centrally in debates about academic freedom and Jewish scholarly dissent on Israel and Palestine.
