Israel Shahak

Israel Shahak (1933–2001) was a Polish-born Holocaust survivor who became a leading Israeli academic, activist, and critic of Zionism. Shahak, a respected professor of chemistry at Hebrew University, developed a global reputation for human rights advocacy, particularly focusing on the oppression of Palestinians in Israel and the occupied territories. As chairperson of the Israeli League for Human and Civil Rights, he campaigned against Israeli policies violating Palestinian rights, including administrative detention and land confiscation. Known for his outspoken critiques of Zionist ideologies and their societal impacts, Shahak also addressed broader issues of Classical Judaism and Jewish fundamentalism. His writings, including three influential books, continue to underscore his commitment to universal human rights and his dissent from mainstream Israeli perspectives.
